Min 18 Months sea service with distance learning as Deck Cadet Stipend about 400-600

4 Months post sea Second mate (functional) course at Indian Maritime University (IMU) + Modular courses

What is Merchant Navy?

Ships that carry goods, people or render services of a non military nature constitute Merchant Navy. Merchant Navy touches every body’s life in one way or the other. Material for building a house may have been brought by a bulk carrier, the fuel used in your vehicle was brought by a tanker and fruits in the market from different countries were brought in a refrigerated container.

Is there any education loan’s available?

Yes, once you have been selected by a company, banks can easily give you education loans at existing market rates.

Is the onboard training of 18 months to be completed at a stretch?

Not necessarily, it depends on the cadets and/or the shipping company. It could be two ships - nine months each or three ships - six months each etc.

Can anyone leave the job in the Merchant Navy and join later after few years?

Yes, it is possible but you will have to ensure your certificates are valid at the time of re-joining and you may also required to undergo some refresher training.

6 What is the maximum number of days a seafarer has to sail on ship at a stretch?

Voyages totally depend on the trading pattern of the vessel. However voyages are generally of 7-10 days but at times it can be up to 30-35 days

Is Merchant Navy better than any other career option?

A student who passes his/her 10+2 exams and takes up any stream for further studies spends at least another 4 years in college before becoming eligible for a job in the particular stream. Whereas a candidate who joins Merchant Navy, has to undergo only 1 year of training at an approved institute and then starts earning whilst doing the onboard training. Moreover the stipend received during the training period itself is higher than the starting salaries in many career streams ashore.At the age of 21 when a normal student graduates from any stream and starts looking for a job, the candidate who has joined Merchant Navy has already completed his/her training and starts working as an officer on board the ship and earns wages to the tune of more than 2 Lakh rupees per month.

Sea of Opportunity?

There are various types of ships but the main job of a ship is to transport goods or people from one place to another. Ships are responsible for transporting 96% of goods around the world and is the most important service helping to keep the wheels of the global economy moving smoothly. Shipping is a vital link in world trade and today it is one of the booming sectors of the industry. If you join the merchant navy you could choose to be a navigating officer (also known as a deck officer) or an engineering officer.

What do you mean by a sponsored candidate?

The term sponsored candidate is used for as a candidate who will be sponsored a sea-berth on board a ship on completion of training. It does not relate to sponsorship of tuition fees at the pre-sea training institute. Candidates who are still undergoing the company selection process will declare themselves as a non-sponsored candidate in the Form A of the IMU entrance exam.These candidates can later declare themselves as a sponsored candidate if they are selected by any shipping company.

What are the duties of a deck officer on board the ship?

The following are some of the duties and responsibilities of deck officers on board the ship:-

Navigate the ship from the bridge in watches (shifts) while at sea
Co-ordinate cargo loading and discharge operationsEnsure safety regulations are observed
supervise the maintenance and upkeep of the ship
Co-ordinate and supervise the activities of the crew
Follow instructions from the captain with regards to ship operations
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all activities

What are the basic health criteria's?

Those who apply for the degree courses should also be mentally and physically fit. Navigator's should have perfect eyesight, whereas marine engineers are allowed to wear spectacles for eyesight up to plus/minus 2.5. Colour blindness is a disqualification for the merchant navy.Important personal attributes required for Merchant Navy officers include physical and mental stamina, practical intelligence, scientific temper, spirit of adventure, team spirit, sporting spirit, cheerful disposition, love for travel, self-confidence, and adaptability. Note : It is mandatory for all crew members to obtain a certificate of competency from Mercantile Marine Department of the Directorate General of Shipping, which functions under the Ministry of Shipping.

Will my family life suffer?

Merchant navy officers are entitled to carry their family on board. Nowadays senior officer's contracts have become shorter (3-4 Months) followed by the same amount of leave.

Can a seafarer do an MBA / IAS after acquiring the B.Sc. in Nautical Science?

You can go for any post graduate qualification or exam after acquiring the B.Sc. in Nautical Science.

Eyesight requirements are 6/6 unaided. Will C/O or Masters have to quit sea if they need to wear spectacles?

Spectacles are allowed up-to 2.5 power for Masters.

What is the retirement age?

As per Seamen's Employment Office Order the retirement age of the person from seafaring profession at 60 yrs. This rule also provided discretion to the Director, Seamen's Employment Office, to permit employment of seamen over 60 years of age, but not exceeding 65, provided the ship owner accepted the engagement of the seaman and the prescribed medical authority declared him 'Fit', prior to engagement.

What are the recreational / medical facilities on board?

Most ships have TV, Video, Games (mostly table top and board games), Table Tennis, Gymnasium, Books, Novels, Magazines, Computers, Email and Internet (limited), They also have a medical chest on board and trained officers to provide medical assistance. Medical advice by radio can also be provided if required.

Is the seafaring career open to women? What are the prospects / safety factor for women on board?

Yes, more and more women are opting for a seafaring career. Prospects and safety for women are like any other job and at par with men. But sea life is far more disciplined.

What are the job prospects for Masters / Chief engineers ashore?

There are plenty of jobs available for Masters / Chief Engineers ashore in marine related or engineering related fields. Seafarers are also sought for management positions in the corporate world.

What pay and perks enjoyed by Merchant Navy personnel?

Pay and perks differs from company to company. Emoluments are much higher on a foreign vessel especially the West European, US, and those form Gulf. Officers earn from Rs. 2,00,000 to Rs. 10,00,000 a month, depending on the level of seniority and shipping organization. Every officers and crew of the merchant navy working on board a vessel, which is carrying foreign cargo, is entitled to draw 75 per cent of his net earnings in foreign exchange. Besides the foreign currency, cigarettes, canned foods and cosmetics are available on board duty free. Personnel with NRI status can enjoy additional tax benefits.
